LG OPENS GAME WORLD FOR CONVENIENT ACCESS TO WIDE RANGE OF SMART TV GAMES

LG wants to bring in a new generation of couch potato gamers, the kind that haven’t really been bothered with extra contraptions like the Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii. In the process, it might actually be able to do what those other platforms have been unable to – make 3D gaming a seamless and user-friendly offering.
The company’s new “Game World” platform will be part of its line of Cinema 3D Internet-connected TVs. It will function similarly to the Google Play store, giving users a bright and vivid digital storefront in which to browse through a wide selection of titles optimized to be played with the Wii Remote-esque LG remote control.
Games will be broken down into categories like “Featured,” “Top Chart,” and “New,” in addition to different genres. LG promises to have everything from casual puzzle games to action titles and RPGs, and even shooters.
The company also noted that because this portal will be exclusive to its line of 3D-enabled TVs, almost all games will be fully rendered in stereoscopic 3D. Most of the company’s Cinema 3D TVs come packed with passive 3D glasses so this creates an optimal channel for three-dimensional living room gaming.
An unknown right now is how this will affect LG’s partnership with cloud gaming service OnLive, although that deal already faced an uncertain fate after OnLive’s spontaneous self-combustion. The company was sold and all of its employees were laid off, though at the time it promised to keep all of its content partnerships intact.
The LG Game World platform will launch worldwide before the end of 2012.
